Are you a perfectionist? If the answer is “yes”, there’s no shame in wearing your perfectionism as a badge of honor as long as your quest for perfection doesn’t prevent you from getting things done. With that in mind, in today’s post, we talk about productivity for perfectionists.
Some people think that productivity and perfectionism just can’t coexist. After all, perfectionists tend to nitpick over every single detail until they get it right, and this almost inevitably hampers productivity.
However, there are ways to get the great results of perfectionism without having to sacrifice productivity. Here’s how.
Work in Time Blocks — and Be Perfectionistic About It
Instead of looking for absolute perfection, strive for the best possible result within an allotted period of time. For example, if you have to create a presentation, tell yourself that you have to finish it in the next two hours. Be perfectionist about sticking to the deadline!
This will help you focus your efforts while satisfying your perfectionistic itch for creating something remarkable.
Be Flexible
Both in sports and business life, flexibility goes a long way.
The reason is that perfectionism is often associated with rigid or black-or-white thinking. By cultivating flexibility without giving up on your quest for excellence, you will create more balanced expectations for yourself — an achievement that will definitely reduce your stress levels.
To practice flexibility, realize that you can turn up work that is perfect considering the circumstances. For example, if you are asked to write a report and have it ready within an hour, the truth is that you won’t be able to create an immaculate, perfect report on such short notice.
In fact, trying to achieve perfection under those circumstances will only hurt your chances of meeting your deadline. However, you can still create a report that’s perfect considering that you only had 60 minutes to craft it.
When you realize that sometimes perfection means getting the job done, you start to become more flexible.
