The coronavirus outbreak has upended every aspect of private and public life, including work. Offices, workplaces and work itself will change to adapt to the new circumstances. As economies around the world resume activities, we will discover workplaces that are not only outwardly different, but also more flexible and more reliant on technology.
More Flexibility
The Covid-19 outbreak has demonstrated the feasibility of remote work. Internet connections are fast enough, the tools exist, and people are ready to use them. Although working from home comes with its own set of challenges, this alternative offers potential savings that companies just can’t ignore. While it’s unlikely we’ll see a sudden shift from in-person work to remote work, companies will show greater flexibility and an increased openness to adopt remote work solutions.
The Workplace Itself
Offices and workplaces will change noticeably. Workstations will be moved or modified to comply with social distancing protocols. Common areas may be closed and breaks may be staggered in order to minimize social interaction. Signs will appear everywhere. We’ll see elevator standing spots, lines marking lanes in corridors, and reminders to wear a mask and wash one’s hands. Contactless technology that allows workers to call elevators or open doors without touching any surface may gain traction, too.
More Reliance on Technology
During the pandemic many companies have gained familiarity with a wide range of technology alternatives. From remote work to project management, most of these solutions are proving to be effective and dependable. Companies will take mental note of the convenience these products offer and continue to take advantage of technology as they resume their activities. Furthermore, the experience with remote work during lockdown may encourage companies to leverage technology to widen their pool of candidates to include talented people from other areas of the country.
In short, the coronavirus pandemic will bring about many new practices. Some will disappear eventually, but others may be here to stay.
