Ensuring that your business gets noticed in today’s media landscape requires a good grasp of content marketing. But what is content marketing, exactly? How to get started with content marketing? In today’s post, we answer all these questions and then some.
So, What Is Content Marketing?
Simply put, content marketing is a marketing approach centered around creating valuable content that users feel compelled to share and interact with.
With a marketing strategy focused on content, you don’t pitch the qualities of your product (the conventional marketing approach). Instead, you create content that your potential clients find useful because it solves their needs.
As you can see, this way to do marketing fits the social media environment like a glove. Social media is driven by engagement, and nothing engages potential customers like content they find relevant, surprising, or useful.
Content Is King
“Content” is a broad term, and that’s another way in which this marketing approach is great for the digital era. Content can take any form, from an article to a video or an infographic, and everything in between. If it creates engagement and inspires the need to share it, then it’s content marketing!
While this is a recent coinage (according to this graph the term entered common use in 2005, approximately), the idea at its core is as old as advertising itself. For example, some consider Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack the work of a great content marketer, since the aim was to promote Franklin’s printing business!
How To Get Started With Content Marketing?
While the idea of dipping your toes in the content marketing waters can feel daunting, there’s nothing to feel intimidated about.
Think of content marketing as a way to share your expertise with your audience. The raw material of content marketing is your know-how, and you have that in spades.
Here are some easy ideas to get started with content marketing:
- Create graphics giving your audience quick tips about your field of expertise. Canva is a free tool that makes it easy to create designs even if you have never done it before.
- Make videos giving useful tips that you know to work. Thanks to YouTube now everyone has their own TV station. All you need is a smartphone!
- Start a podcast. While some aspects of podcasting require money and certain technical know-how, you can take a shortcut by recording yourself talking about whatever topic you want to cover and then upload the sound file as a video to YouTube. Podcasting on a budget!
