Making good hiring decisions is essential to maintain and grow your business. Use these four tips to conduct better job interviews and find the ideal candidate for any position within your organization.
1. Be Prepared
We tend to believe that it’s the candidate who must prepare for a job interview, but the same is true for the interviewer. Review the candidate’s background and think about specific questions you can make to gauge their experience and expertise. Ask the same questions to all the candidates, but think of specific things you could inquire about depending on their personal history.
2. Be Systematic
A job interview shouldn’t be an aimless conversation but a well-thought-out process. Before the interview starts, set objectives and move through them as the exchange between you and the candidate evolves. Think of the interview as a test or a final exam and strive to be personable but rigorous at the same time.
3. Listen
This is probably the oldest piece of advice when it comes to human interactions, but some people still forget to apply it. When interviewing candidates for a job position, make sure to listen. Pay attention to the terms they use and ask yourself why they chose that specific nuance. When it comes to personal information, listen to their story, and figure out how they depict themselves and past coworkers. For example, if in their stories they always blame others of their mistakes, that may indicate a lack of accountability.
4. Observe
Another essential but overlooked skill, observation should be one of your main strategies when you conduct a job interview. Body language and eye movement are a window into a candidate’s state of mind. Observe as well the way the candidate faces the small challenges that arise during the interview process since that’s a reliable indicator of how they deal with problems in an ordinary setting.
